I Cho Cho Choose You
We all have our favourites.
Favourite food.
Favourite comics.
Favourite writers.
Favourite guilty pleasure TV show.
Favourite gaming platform.
When we all make a choice, oh wait…erm…okay. When most make a choice of what platform they will favour and play on they have a reason. If you’re me you never make a choice completely. The question is, why do you favour one platform over another? I don’t mean, which is better, but why do you like it so much that you’re willing to sink your hard earned cash into it.
I lie, I do play favourites. I have an irrational and rational bias towards the Sony platforms. In regards to the Playstations, it’s usually been a hardware and game bias, mostly hardware. I do love my DS, but there’s just something nice about the shiny PSP that makes me love it. That aside I do own all 3 consoles, both handhelds and a kick ass PC. Not to mention the board games and tabletop RPGs. I flit from platform to another, but most people aren’t like me.
So here’s my question to you: Why’d you make your choice?

I sold my Xbox because I decided to make a concerted effort to remove all Microsoft products from my life. There is no longer a copy of windows in my house, so I switched for a PS3. Historically I am a Sony fanboy anyway, I was in the queue for a PS1 the day it was released, same for the PS2, I lost my way for a while but now I’m back. The only drawback with this decision so far, is that I can’t play online with any of my RL friends, as they’re all Xbox owners.

My choice came down to game exclusivity and money, if I’m honest.
I have nothing but praise for the Wii but I have never particularly felt the urge to own one myself. It just doesn’t have enough titles that interest me personally although I do enjoy a game of Mario Kart at my friends house.
When it came round to owning a current gen platform I could only afford one. A PS3 or a Xbox360. There weren’t really any exclusive games on the PS3 that I just *had* to play and Final Fantasy was going multiplatform. The 360 was also more affordable and at the time had a much larger back catalogue of games. As for things like blu-ray – well, I gotta be honest, I just don’t really care (it doesn’t make a big diff to me, personally). So a 360 was definitely the right choice for me.
I still don’t have a PS3 but since the price has come down I have been considering it more and more. I would definitely like to play The Last Guardian.
I don’t particularly fangirl any console. I also have a DS lite and quite the collection of retro consoles (PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, MegaCD, SNES, N64). I would most definitely like to own them all – I just don’t want to pay through the nose for it 😀

I pick the Xbox 360 out of the consoles, though not because there is anything about it that I particularly like, it’s totally because I detest the playstation controller as I always get pain in my hands if I use one for a couple/few hours. I respect the wii, but it isn’t really aimed at my sort of game tastes. Overall I probably still play on my PC more than my xbox, though it’s getting close to 50/50 over the last year.

I cannot grasp the love for the XBox, personally — anything I want to play on it is on PC (and usually superior there), the PS3 has Blu-Ray which does matter to me, and is generally got the games I want that DON’T come to PC. Also: Red Ring of Death. It’s not that I love the PS3 and my Wii MORE then I love anything else, it’s just that the XBOX seems to be built mostly for the Fratboy Crowd, built poorly, and thus, wasn’t worth the money.
I do, however, have to admit: I play PC most of the time. My PS3 is just there for when I want to do something with the husband two player in a different style or enjoy a different style of gaming on the big TV without lugging my tower out to do so.

Amanda – yes! The dreaded 3 red rings of death. Sadly, I have suffered this (happened right in the middle of an online L4D2 match – the trauma!)
To be fair, Microsoft did send me a brand new console within 2 weeks of collecting the broken one but it still doesn’t really make-up for the fact that the 360 has a shocking failure rate.
I still love my 360 though. We spend too many happy hours together for us not have built up some kind of connection!

Definitely spend most of my game-time on the PC, but I chose the PS3. I don’t like the XBox controller, and as Amanda said, the games I’d want to play on the XBox are probably available on the PC either way. And the whole issue with the red ring and over heating and everything turned me off even more. 2 years ago, the only game I was playing online was Final Fantasy XI, and thankfully it didn’t matter what platform you played on in order to play together with friends.
I played on the Sega Genesis, I played the NES, SNES, N64 and Gamecube, PS1 PS2, Wii, old-style Gameboy (and Sega Gamegear), DS lite, PSP. I’m generally not discriminate, but when it came to the choice between PS3 and…well, nothing (because my brother owns an XBox either way) – price went down, new PS3 came out (I just got it less than 6 months ago) – yeah, I got the PS3 and upgraded my computer.
